Two iconic bears have found their home in Gowanus. The bears are an interactive art instillation by Artist-Engineer
Jen Lewin. “The Ursas” are inspired by Ursa Minor and Ursa Major constellations: “Ursa Major created to honor and memorialize extinct species and call attention to the climate crisis, and Ursa Minor a glowing totem of infinity mirrors signifying hope, and to looks up.”

Original created for Burning Man, the interactive sculpture is now permanent installed at Nevins Landing, along Brooklyn’s Gowanus waterfront.

The larger bear, standing at 30 feet, is Ursa Major, constructed from reclaimed ocean plastic from a previous installation of Lewin’s.
“Visitors can step inside the sculpture, where an infinity-mirrored chamber contains hand-drawn illustrations of species listed as extinct or presumed extinct on the IUCN Red List.”

The smaller bear is Ursa Minor, at13 feet which is made of infinity mirrors and programmable LED lighting.
As Lewis states: “It is very playful and joyful, but there is a message behind it, which is one that I hope can be reflective.”
Visit the bears at the newly accessible stretch of the Gowanus Canal.
